Crash Detection is one of the notable new features on the iPhone 14. If a collision is detected, the iPhone will make an emergency call after 20 seconds (including waiting time before the countdown) except when the car owner cancels the call. If no one else responds, there will be an audio message sent to emergency services, notifying of the incident with latitude and longitude coordinates.

To find out if the iPhone 14 can really detect traffic accidents, the team behind the TechRax YouTube channel decided to have a real remote-controlled car crash into an obstacle that is a scrap car in the middle of the road. moorland with iPhone 14 placed in the car.

The first test was unsuccessful, because the Mercury Grand Marquis went through the obstacle. Due to the lack of brakes, the car traveled quite a distance before coming to a stop.

The team tries again, eventually causing the collision to happen, enough to trigger the Crash Detection feature. Initially, when opening the door, the phone still retains the original interface, making YouTubers think the feature does not work. But seconds later, the phone started counting down from 10 to 1 before calling emergency services. There is also a loud noise that attracts the attention of people around.

The second test involved a slight crash and the iPhone 14 was mounted on the driver’s seat headrest instead of on the dashboard like the first time. The results show that there is a small delay before the collision detection system actually works – Video: TechRax/YouTube

That said, the Crash Detection feature really works as advertised.

What about the fate of the test car? The Mercury Grand Marquis has only a few scratches and is still in good working order. This sedan is famous for its sturdy frame, similar to the Ford Crown Victoria police car.
