Xiaomi teases a camera system with liquid lenses, to be launched on the upcoming Mi MIX

In a post on Weibo today, Xiaomi revealed the smartphone camera system with liquid lens, which will be launched on the upcoming Mi MIX. As the name implies, this type of lens will include a liquid layer inside, using voltage to be able to change the focus and focus of the lens.

Xiaomi says this liquid lens can capture everything from telephoto to macro photography. Besides, the ability to autofocus is also improved more quickly. The next Mi MIX smartphone that is expected to feature this type of lens will be released on March 29.

Liquid lenses have been around for a few years, but are only used in industrial applications where traditional lenses with moving mechanical parts can wear out too quickly. However, its compact size and versatility make this type of lens very potential if it is fitted on a smartphone. In theory, a liquid lens can replace many different types of camera lenses on smartphones.

Liquid lenses on smartphones will be a new experiment, in line with Xiaomi’s Mi MIX series, which pioneered innovative technologies. In 2018, Xiaomi launched the Mi MIX 3 with a unique sliding screen. The following year, Xiaomi continued to launch the Mi MIX Alpha with a screen design that surrounded almost the entire smartphone. This year, Xiaomi’s next Mi MIX may feature a folding screen design.
