With US sanctions, Huawei dropped from No. 1 to No. 6 on the list of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers.

The Chinese tech giant shipped 33 million smartphones worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2020, a 41 percent decrease from the same period last year. Accordingly, Huawei’s market share is currently only 8%, ranking 6th among the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world.

Losing its No. 1 position, Huawei has been left behind by a series of names such as Samsung, Apple, Oppo or Vivo. This is the first time that Huawei has dropped out of the group of the top five largest smartphone manufacturers in the world in the past six years.

“Huawei has experienced a significant downturn in most markets due to US sanctions,” said Amber Liu, an analyst with Canalys Research.

Huawei’s woes came when Apple shipped 90.1 million phones in Q4, the largest number ever sold by any phone maker in history. Apple also announced a quarter with record sales in China. Meanwhile, China’s market share, which is considered a lifesaver for Huawei, is also being fiercely competed by domestic and international brands.
