Start-up introduces English learning software

A young Vietnamese man has successfully developed an English learning software that helps local learners improve their communication skills.

After getting a degree from the Australian National University and a masters at Curtin University, Tran Van Hoang has spent 10 years with his start-up group studying the challenges facing Vietnamese English learners when practising speaking. He then created the Xpeak to help solve the problems.

The software, which is designed for mobile phones, uses Google’s speech recognition app to check learners’ pronunciation.

Hoang said that he created the software after studying several popular English learning programmes including Pimsleur, The Third Ear, Effortless English or software such as Rosetta Stone, LiveMocha, and Duolingo.

Xpeak was designed with two parts, with the first focusing on basic phonic system and the second introducing 24 basic communication situations. Learners can practice roles and are rated based on their level.

The software has been up to store for a month and got over 20,000 downloads and there are more than 1,000 learners studying with it every day, Hoang revealed.

With Expeak, your mobile phones now can become your language parents,” he said, adding that he was continuing to upgrade the software to give better value for learners.

Xpeak has just been selected among 20 best IT products for the final round of Vietnamese Talents Awards 2016, which will be held on November 19.
