OnePlus unveiled a smartphone concept that can change color, track motion

OnePlus has just released a smartphone concept that can change colors and track users’ movements, which is a way to introduce to the world a completely new technology and also become the next smartphone that OnePlus launched.

The OnePlus 8T Concept is a similar smartphone to the OnePlus 8T, launched a few months ago, but it has a unique backside design with motion tracking radar and changeable colors.

According to OnePlus, the ability to change color is due to a film containing metal oxide placed under the glass of the smartphone, and changes color when different voltages are applied.

Basically, smartphones can change the color to display notifications, such as incoming calls or texts, just like the indicator light on previous smartphones. But things get more interesting when combined with the motion tracking radar module in the back.

This module is integrated in the rear camera cluster of the smartphone, it emits millimeter-frequency waves to allow the smartphone to recognize and locate surrounding objects, similar to a radar.

Functionally, it looks similar to the Pixel 4’s radar-enabled Motion Sense technology, allowing you to swipe your hand on top of your smartphone to switch songs or turn off alarms. It can also detect users who are nearby to display the time and the notification on the screen. This feature is very interesting, but Google has not continued to bring it to the next Pixel smartphones.

The OnePlus 8T Concept uses this motion tracking functionality, combined with the ability to change colors to do some cool things. For example, the back of the smartphone can change the color to notify incoming calls, then you just need to wave your hand to reject or accept the call without touching the smartphone. Or the radar can sense the breathing and change the color of the back, making the smartphone “become an effective biofeedback device,” according to OnePlus.

Those are pretty cool features, but there’s no guarantee we’ll see them on a commercial OnePlus smartphone. About a year ago, OnePlus also launched the ambitious OnePlus Concept One, a smartphone that uses sharpened glass to disappear the rear camera cluster. But this technology has yet to appear in any smartphone.

Like the OnePlus Concept One before it, OnePlus said it has no plans to commercialize the OnePlus 8T Concept. So this can be seen as a small event showcasing what this smartphone company is doing.
