Old Huawei phone update license has expired

Tram Ho

Due to the ban from the US government, Huawei phones released after May 16, 2019 will not be able to use Google’s software. However, older Huawei phones that came out before that date, still have Google services installed and updates on Android and Google apps.

But until today, even that is no longer there.

The Google representative confirmed to The Washington Post that today is the expiration date of the Temporary General License (TGL) granted to Huawei. This license is what keeps old Huawei phones up to date. This expired license means old Huawei phones will not receive major security updates in the future.

The Google statement states:

We have continued to cooperate with Huawei, as part of our compliance with government regulations, to provide security updates and updates to Google apps and services on existing devices, and we will continue to do so for as long as we permit . ”

In fact, the purpose of this TGL license is to allow US companies to continue working with Huawei to provide software updates to rural carriers using Huawei equipment. The fact that Google can use this license to keep updating old Huawei phones is just a side effect of this license.

With both old and new Huawei phones unable to receive even the most basic of updates from Google, the company seems to have no choice but to continue moving towards HarmonyOS, the operating system that They develop themselves and are seen as a backup plan if they completely lose access to Android.
