Intel continues to lag behind its rivals, 7nm chips being delayed until 2022

Tram Ho

Intel has finally released chips based on 10nm manufacturing process, after years of delay. However, Intel continues to struggle with the next generation 7nm process. Expected launch of 7nm chips will be delayed, at least until 2022.

In the memorandum published along with the Q2 / 2020 financial statements, the launch time of 7nm chips has been delayed by 6 months compared to the previous plan. According to the original plan, these new generation chips will be released by the end of 2021.

Intel also acknowledged that the problems encountered while manufacturing on the 7nm process led to a one-year delay in progress, compared to the internal roadmap. Meanwhile, rival AMD launched Ryzen 4000 chips based on the 7nm architecture months ago, outperforming Intel.

Even so, Intel’s business results are still very positive. Intel’s personal computer chip division made sales of $ 9.5 billion, up 7% from the same period last year. Intel said sales increased sharply during the Covid-19 plague, as the number of laptops sold increased sharply to meet the needs of studying and working from home.

Total revenue in Q2 / 2020 of Intel also increased by 20% over the same period last year, reaching 19.7 billion USD. Much of this strong growth comes from memory and data center solutions.

However, it is clear that Intel is lagging behind other competitors, like AMD or TSMC. Apple’s replacement of Intel chips with self-made ARM chips will also create a new trend, which is the use of mobile chips for laptops. If other manufacturers follow Apple, Intel will undoubtedly suffer.
