Hard to find a SharePoint Developer – Here is the reason why?

No matter WHAT SharePoint is getting “HOT”. Over the past few years ,lot of organizations have planned to implement SharePoint for their Intranet, publishing site or Content Management, which created the demand for new SharePoint positions. This trend is still going on.

But at the same time the organization’s (recruiters) find it challenging to hire/recruit a SharePoint Resource whether it may be a Developer or an Administrator.

SharePoint is built on ASP.NET Web-application so in order to understand the SharePoint in a better way once has to have a good knowledge on ASP.NET Development, Web development.

Therefore a SharePoint Resource has to understand both SharePoint and .NET architecture which make it tough to migrate to SharePoint, unless he/she has a burning desire to learn.

Our Hangout Team conducted various polls involving .NET developers and the results indicate that very few .NET developers know what SharePoint does. A good percentage of them know SharePoint as a tool for storing/sharing documents.

SharePoint is all about planning, installing, configuring, administering with less focus on Development. Typically Custom development in SharePoint should be the last option but a SharePoint developer with ASP.NET background will see this as first option some time’s putting the application at risk(downside).

Because of this demand/Shortage in SharePoint Skillset in the market, organizations are training their current .NET employees. On the other side some organization’s even take this as a cost advantage and train their .NET employees because they know that they have to spend more on SharePoint resource.

There are instances where some web developers (.NET) aren’t ready to get trained or migrate to SharePoint because of the Restrictions /Challenges with SharePoint during the Development cycle to perform a customization task, whereas the same task can easily accomplished in .NET.

Since SharePoint is all about leveraging the product to fit your needs ,most organization’s require the SharePoint resource for a shorter duration(especially in Contracting world),in other words projects are short term. This creates a job security issue for the developer.

Some organizations even considered putting the idea of implementing SharePoint to bed because of this resource Shortage. Considering all the above mentioned reasons, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft will tackle this issue and not lose the market share.
