Google Pixel 5 disappoints in DxOMark’s camera review: Out of the top 10, zoom lost to Pixel 4

Tram Ho

Late last month, Google unveiled the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 duo as part of an event held in the US. After nearly a month, DxOMark recently published a review of the Pixel 5’s camera, showing that the phone is only about 6.2% improvement over its predecessor Pixel 4.

A bit about the configuration, Google Pixel 5 is equipped with a dual camera system placed in a square module on the back. The rear camera cluster includes a 12.2MP f / 1.7 main sensor and a 16MP f / 2.2 ultra-wide angle camera with a 107-degree viewing angle.

According to the evaluation results of DxOMark site, the camera on the Pixel 5 is of good quality, scoring an average score of 120, including 129 shooting points, 49 zoom points and 107 video recording points.

Unfortunately, this is only 7 points higher than the Pixel 4’s overall score of 113. Also, the Pixel 5 is even worse in the zoom category, scoring 49 points from the Pixel 4’s 55 points. The handset is ranked 15th in DxOMark’s rankings (as of October 30), behind Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

Pixel 5: Take pictures

Speaking of photography, DxOMark thinks the Pixel 5’s strong point is its ability to capture exposure, color reproduction, and autofocus. As for stills, it is possible to produce images with a high level of detail through both the main and ultra wide-angle cameras, albeit with noise.

As mentioned above, the Pixel 5 has the biggest minus point in terms of zoom capabilities, as well as the viewing angle is still quite limited. In fact, there will be noise when zoomed above 2x because the camera does not have a telephoto camera. Additionally, it also had difficulty simulating bokeh when there were more than two objects in the frame.

Pixel 5: Video recording

As for video recording, DxOMark appreciates the Pixel 5’s autofocus capabilities, which achieves 105 autofocus points – on par with Huawei’s latest flagship, the Mate 40 Pro.

In normal lighting conditions, the resulting video has a pretty good level of detail, exposure and color, especially anti-shake in 4K 30fps mode. However, there will be noise, color cast, and poor exposure when shooting videos in low light.

Pixel 5: Pros and cons

In short, the camera on Google Pixel 5 has the advantage of fast autofocus, good white balance, vivid colors and good anti-shake. However, its downside is noise in both photography and video, the bokeh effect, zoom and low level of detail in low light.
