Apple stopped new orders from iPhone maker Wistron, for exploiting workers’ labor

Tram Ho

For the second time in two months, Apple warned one of the manufacturers and assemblers of its iPhone for exploiting workers’ labor and violating the labor law. According to Reuters and Bloomberg, Apple has put Taiwanese giant Wistron in a state of “Trial”, which means that the manufacturer will not receive any new contracts from Apple until everything is settled .

The reason for this began on December 12, when about 2,000 workers decided to protest against unpaid wages by staging a riot at one of Wistron’s offices. Workers demolished the office, overturned the employees’ vehicles.

However, after the investigation by the local authorities, Wistron’s labor exploitation and serious labor law violations were discovered. The company paid below the minimum wage and forced workers to work overtime.

The survey also found that 8,500 out of 10,500 workers at the Wistron factory were contracted workers, not full-time workers. While the factory was only allowed to operate when there were 5,000 workers at the start.

Wistron apologized, saying they would restructure the plant’s operations and not let this happen again. The company also said it fired the Vice President of Sales in India.
