When artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a craze around the world, websites and AI applications that help create pictures are becoming more and more popular and noticeable. AI-drawn paintings will make the work look much more new and interesting, even many people can’t distinguish between the paintings created by the artist and the AI.

In early 2023, Boris Eldagsen, a German photographer, declined the prestigious award at the “Sony world photography awards” after admitting his winning photo was actually the product of artificial intelligence. This work is a black and white photograph, depicting two women from two different generations.

The examination of works, photos created by AI or humans is a controversial issue in the art world. However, this problem can be partially solved when recently, a website to help identify photos created by AI was born.

A website called “AI or Not” developed by Optic AI helps identify the source of photos completely free of charge. Users only need to upload photos and wait for a few seconds, the website will give the results. “AI or Not” can identify photos created by 4 AI software: Stable Diffusion, Midjourney V4, DALL-E and GAN. However, the website is currently unable to recognize photos created by Midjourney 5th version software. According to developer Optic AI, “AI or Not” has a ratio of pinpointing the source of photos accurate to 95%.

To use “AI or Not”, users visit the website or message with the chatbot on Telegram. In addition, “AI or Not” is being developed as a Chrome extension, but this is only a beta with less accuracy on the website.

Google has also launched an “About This Image” feature on the search engine, helping users distinguish AI-generated photos from human-made ones.
