Tram Ho

Just recently, a Google spokesperson issued a shocking statement. That is Huawei’s upcoming Mate 30 smartphone will not be allowed to use licensed Android operating system and Google services. The reason is that the US government ban on Huawei.

Google will not provide its services and applications for the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 smartphone.

A Huawei spokesman responded to a Reuters interview after the report was published. Accordingly, Huawei will continue to use the Android operating system and Google’s ecosystem if allowed by the US Government. Otherwise, Huawei will continue to develop its own operating system.

Without Google, no one would buy Huawei smartphones

Huawei can use the open source Android version without violating the US ban. However, popular Google services like Google Maps, search engines, Play Store app store or Gmail must be licensed.

Independent analyst Richard Windsor said: “Without Google services, no one would buy Huawei smartphones . Especially in Europe, when users are familiar with Google applications and services.

Huawei, from a telecom equipment manufacturer, has gradually stepped up to become one of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers. But the U.S. government ban has dealt a blow to Huawei’s smartphone sales outside of China. Huawei’s market share in Europe has decreased from 24.9% to 19.3% in Q2 / 2019.

Huawei has also prepared backup plans, one of which is to develop its own operating system called HarmonyOS. However, even Huawei executives believe that HarmonyOS is not enough to completely replace Android.

Huawei hardware will not be affected

Huawei said its smartphone hardware components will not be affected by the ban. Most importantly, it is the Kirin 990 microprocessor equipped in the Mate 30.

Kirin 990 is developed by HiSilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei, based on the design of ARM Holdings. Although ARM has terminated its partnership with Huawei, Huawei said its licensing agreement existed before the ban appeared. Therefore, Huawei has a permanent ownership of the ARMv8 design and chips based on that design, including the Kirin 990.

Huawei’s only concern at the moment is software, which will greatly affect sales in the European market. The Mate 30 is also Huawei’s first flagship smartphone to be launched after a US government ban. This will be an important test to see if Huawei can survive without Google.
