The US unexpectedly wants to partner with Huawei to come up with 5G standards

Tram Ho

Just a year ago, the U.S. put Huawei on the entity list and banned cooperation with U.S. technology companies. The Chinese telecommunications giant is also considered a national security threat, and is banned in the US market. Since 2008, the United States has repeatedly called on allies to not use Huawei’s telecommunications equipment to build 5G networks.

The US tries to replace Huawei’s telecommunications equipment in building its 5G network, but the fact is that Huawei is a year ahead of the technology compared with rivals like Nokia or Ericsson.

Recently according to a Reuters report, the US Department of Commerce is preparing to sign a new code, allowing US companies to work with Huawei to come up with next-generation 5G network standards. This common standard will allow network devices of different companies to be easily compatible and work together.

However, the real purpose of this new code is to give US telecommunications engineers a better say in 5G standard meeting. Because in the past, American companies were uncertain about what they were allowed to discuss and speak at Huawei joint meetings.

That silenced U.S. engineers at the meeting, while Huawei engineers could have a greater influence in deciding the common standards of 5G networks. It is the strict rules that the US Government imposes on Huawei, which has constrained the country’s technological development.

Last year, Trump administration officials contacted local telecom companies like Cisco and Oracle, to ask if the companies were willing to compete with Huawei and produce network stations. 5G or not. Both companies declined, saying they did not have the money or time to enter the business.
