Simply called the Wireless Charging Platform, Tesla’s new product is said to be a bit like the AirPower that Apple wants to produce because the three devices can be placed anywhere on the Tesla charger, and they will all receive charging power up to 15W per device.

Tesla says that the product’s angular design was inspired by the Cybertruck’s look, and that it has an aluminum body along with an alcantara (a synthetic textile) surface and a removable magnetic stand, thanks to which Can be used to charge devices on flat or inclined surfaces.

Using FreePower technology, users can charge Qi-enabled devices such as phones or earbuds, and they can be placed anywhere on a surface without precise alignment. .

Earlier in September 2017, Apple announced AirPower, a multi-device charger designed to charge iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time. Apple wanted users to be able to place their devices anywhere on ‌AirPower‌ to charge, but technology issues like thermal management and signal interference made this product unviable. While ‌AirPower‌ was supposed to launch in 2018, it never came out, and Apple confirmed the cancellation of the project in 2019.

Tesla’s charging mat is using FreePower, an Aira technology that has been used in other wireless charging platforms like Nomad’s Base Station Pro. Base Station Pro also supports charging from any location on the product, but in fact it still has problems because it does not work well with iPhone 12 and above.

While Tesla’s product is similar to what Apple had hoped to achieve with ‌AirPower‌, it’s currently limited to Qi-based devices like the ‌iPhone‌ and AirPods, and it won’t be able to charge the Apple Watch either.
