Talking a bit about Live Tiles on Windows 10, will Microsoft quit and redesign the Start Menu?

Tram Ho

The new icon set for Windows 10 cannot be denied that it is very beautiful. But when it started to appear as a replacement for the flat, flat icons on the Start Menu, what I was thinking of was whether Microsoft would kill Live Tiles?

New icons for Windows 10 are static icons with more colorful designs in the Fluent Design language. Microsoft is also listening to user feedback on the Start Menu on Windows 10X – a very fresh and beautiful Start Menu interface, from which it will be able to decide to completely change the Start Menu design on the current Windows 10.

Microsoft said in the meantime, Live Tiles still exists in parallel with the new application icons. You can recognize this by looking at applications such as Calendar, Mail with new icons and rotation effects showing short content specific to Live Tiles.

Live Tiles are squares or rectangles dating back to Windows 8 and it’s not a static icon. It has the function of being an icon so that when you click on it, we open the application but also have a notification function with short paragraphs of content and numbers displayed outside.

For example, with Windows Mail, Live Tiles will display a section of the subject, the sender as well as the mail box with the new email. Since there is no need to open the application, we still know what’s new in the mail box and decide whether to open Mail to check or not.

Similar to many other applications such as Calendar, To-do and especially news applications such as Microsoft News or I often use Flipboard.

I also use dictionary and translation applications like Dictionary Pro, Microsoft Translator and set up the Live Tiles to be able to learn new words everyday. Or like Netflix and Spotify, Live Tiles will display newly posted content, suggesting good playlists.

I personally used to use Live Tiles and made good use of it over time. So if Microsoft abandoned Live Tiles, this is a pity for me. Without Live Tiles, the Start Menu of Windows 10 will become too normal with nice but static icons, at the very least just show the numbers next to the icons to announce what’s new similar to the icons on smartphones . Live Tiles, if used on touchscreen computers with Tablet mode, will be much nicer and try to think of what the full-screen Start Menu will look like with static icons.

In addition, the current flat interface of Windows 10 is now compatible with Live Tiles and you have also seen how the new icons are displayed in the Start Menu> it is still in the middle of a square with a monochrome background. So if you want these icons to look better and blend in better with the overall Windows 10 interface, Microsoft will have to redesign the entire Start Menu, such as the above concept.

The Windows 10 interface is changing over time and if retaining Live Tiles, Microsoft needs to improve it so that more users can exploit it. In terms of display, Live Tiles is pretty good, but in terms of features and usability. For example, with the News app, Live Tiles displays breaking news, I catch a glimpse, and I want to click to see the news right away. But this operation merely opens the News app and still needs a few more operations to find the breaking news that has just appeared on Live Tiles and sometimes finds it out.

I like a combination of old and new. Such as the new Start Menu like Windows 10X but Live Tiles will be transformed into a Widget-like form to pin off the desktop. Users will have more options to capture information rather than just encapsulated in the Start Menu.

What do you think about Live Tiles and how often do you use Live Tiles?
