Samsung is developing a 600MP camera sensor, which takes up 12% of the smartphone’s area and 22mm thick

After developing 100MP camera sensors, Samsung will take a further breakthrough with 600MP camera sensors.

Earlier this year, Samsung’s executive vice president of sensor business, Yongin Park, wrote an analysis and expressed the company’s desire to create a camera sensor beyond the human eye. If you do not know, the human eye has a resolution of about 576 megapixels.

Yongin Park also admits that increasing the number of megapixels is not easy. Cramming too many pixels on a camera sensor will require an increase in the size of the sensor, and a decrease in the size of individual pixels.

As revealed by Ice Universe, the 600MP sensor Samsung is studying has a pixel size of 0.8 micrometres and an overall size of about 1.75 inches. This camera sensor alone takes up 12% of the area on a smartphone, and it will be about 22mm thick.

Imagine a 8.3mm thick Galaxy Note20 with a 22mm thick camera on the back, it is indeed no different than a camera. That is why Samsung still has a lot of work to do to be able to shrink the size of the sensor to become more reasonable on a smartphone in the future.

However, a higher megapixel count does not guarantee a better photo, which is why Apple and Google are not in the megapixel race. But Samsung thinks high-resolution sensors could have other uses besides taking pictures. In addition, with a 600MP sensor, the smartphones will be able to record 4K and 8K videos with more flexible zoom capabilities.

The 600MP sensors will take a while before they can be applied and commercialized. But before that, we will likely see Samsung launch new sensors with 150MP and 250MP resolutions. It seems that the Korean giant is determined to become a pioneer in the field of smartphone camera sensors.
