Millions of Chrome browser users could be at risk

Security researcher Wladimir Palant has discovered dozens of Chrome extensions containing malicious code and this has been confirmed by security firm Avast.

Specifically, 34 extensions (Extensions) for the Chrome web browser were found to contain malicious code. These malicious codes are inserted into extensions with functions such as blocking ads on the browser, managing opened tabs or changing the Chrome interface, etc., making users unaware and installing it in the Chrome browser on your machine.

According to expert Wladimir Palant, once malicious code is installed into a web browser, they can open a backdoor for hackers to enter the computer, automatically downloading and installing more malware for hackers. track and steal personal information on users’ computers.

The danger is that these types of malware also allow hackers to steal online accounts that users access with the Chrome browser or redirect users to fraudulent websites to steal their information.

Notably, these malicious codes only attack computers running Windows operating systems, while Chrome browser users on Mac or Linux computers will not be affected.

By the time it was discovered by Wladimir Palant, these 34 extensions had a total of more than 87 million installs from the Chrome extension toolkit. This means that 87 million Chrome users who have installed these malicious codes are at risk of being attacked by hackers.

Security firm Avast has notified Google of 34 extensions that contain malicious code. To date, Google has removed these extensions from the Chrome web browser extension toolkit. However, users still need to check and immediately remove these utilities if they have accidentally installed them in the Chrome browser on their computer.
