Macbook pro will no longer be the device of programming?

Information to programmers who are wondering to buy a new working laptop, these are the points that Apple recently announced:

  • They will kill the MacBook Air, one of the most beautiful and popular laptops ever
  • Their new laptop will have the same amount of RAM – the same processor – with what they had a few years ago
  • They will replace the escape and function buttons (used by everything) with the tiny emoji bar

At least we still have a headphone jack.

But they also left … almost all other ports.

"Out of this transfer box, it seems that Apple feels they still haven't earned enough money."

How many Macs did Apple sell last year? 19 million.

How many programmers do the world have? 19 million.

Is it a coincidence?

Apple is clearly sleeping on its own success. They didn't listen to one of their biggest segments: programmers.

Other years, same parameters

MacBook Pros has 16 GB of RAM since 2010. So how many gigabytes does Macbook Pro 2016 have? Still 16 GB. And that is the number after the upgrade is paid.

MacBook Pros is equipped with a dual-core processor of 2.4 gigahertz in 2010. What processor is the MacBook Pro 13 ″ 2016 available? 2.0 gigahertz dual-core processor.

Thanks to Eric Elliott for pointing out you can update the 15 "to 2.9 gigahertz quad core version – but this version will cost up to $ 3,000.

When you buy the brand-new 2016 MacBook Pro, you're spending $ 2,000 on a device … almost exactly the same as in 2010, just adding some minor improvements. While there have been some progress in the past 6 years, the price of the Mac (Pro) line continues to be higher (much) than other hardware models not coming from Apple.

You can buy a laptop with the same specs (except for the Retina screen and the well-not-so-not-so-good-looking Force Touch trackpad) at half the price Apple offers. For example, here are some laptop models that are highly rated:

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E460 14 ″ HD Screen (1366 × 768), Intel Dual Core i5-6200U 2.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 500GB Solid State Drive, Win 7 Pro 64 Bit Laptop Computer, NEW 2016

HP Pavilion 17 Gaming Laptop (Intel i7-6700HQ, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB 7200rpm HDD, NVIDIA GTX 960M 4GB, Windows 10, 17.3-Inch Full HD) Cheap Low Price Thin Portable Notebook for Gamers

Undoubtedly – when a developer buys a Mac, they really only spend money on the software: Operating system. And the programming tool ecosystem is built around that operating system.

Luckily, there is still another Unix-like operating system for you to install: Linux.

Linux obviously remains as 'user-friendly' as a MacOS. But with more and more resources from laptop manufacturers, Linux will catch up to MacOS in the near future.

Even Linux's rival rivals Microsoft also have many improvements to be more developer friendly. Windows 10 is now partially supported by Linux .

Opportunity to rise again of Linux computers?

Macbooks are gradually becoming an unattractive option for programmers, and this in the long run can bring great benefits to everyone.

With an increasingly fierce competition from Windows, and more resources pouring into Linux distribution, developers will probably soon see an array of optimized operating systems that can run on "mediocre" hardware low.

What do you think? With this direction, will Apple continue to lose points in the programmer's eyes, and will you switch to using other laptops?
