According to an internal announcement sent by Mr. Nham, Huawei is in a “dead or alive” moment. Since May 2019, Huawei has fallen into an uneasy situation when its name in the US blacklist, prohibiting transactions with its partners. Despite being granted a temporary purchase license, instability still surrounds Huawei.

The biggest loss of the company lies in the international smartphone market. Huawei’s statistics estimate that they sold less than 60 million phones compared to when not banned. In 2018, the number of smartphones shipped increased by 34% to 206 million, in the first quarter of 2019 it even increased by 50% while rival Samsung and Apple all saw sales drop. In the second quarter, due to the impact of the ban from the US, Huawei growth dropped to 8.3%.

Huawei has successfully penetrated the European market, is on the way to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer. However, losing Android – the brain inside the device – as well as the Play Store ecosystem will be a critical blow for Huawei phones abroad.

Mr. Nham warned in the letter that redundant employees needed to find ways to make themselves more useful. They can set up a new project mining team and get promoted if done well. Or, they can find another location in the company. If they fail, their salaries are reduced every three months and eventually lose their jobs.

After being embargoed by the US, the company switched to a 24-hour working regime, about 10,000 programmers working three shifts in three offices to develop alternatives to American products. Huawei has just introduced the Harmony operating system this month to prove they can write their own operating system. However, it does not convince people that it is possible to reach the Android level.

Besides, Huawei also faces the problem of brain drain when prestige is affected and the work is overloaded. The company had to shorten the work force before new conditions. Nham writes that the company’s priority is for worthy employees and to promote outstanding individuals as soon as possible, replacing the blood for the organization.

Explaining the renewal license to Huawei, Commerce Minister Wilbur Ross said some US carriers still depend on Huawei technology and need time to shake off. Therefore, although Washington temporarily relaxed for the company, the situation is still extremely precarious as Mr. Nham warned.
