Google Doodle is one of Google’s perennial projects to celebrate major holidays, important events, or to honor important figures and achievements in human history. At this time, the familiar logo on the Google homepage will be temporarily replaced with other special icons that, when clicked, information related to those events and characters will appear in full and in detail. Best.

On November 4 this year, Google Doodle decided to celebrate the 88th birthday of Cao Con (Charles K. Kao), who is considered the father of optical fiber and laid the foundation for high-speed Internet today. now on.

Cao Con – the father of optical fiber and the one who laid the foundation for today’s fiber optic system.

Cao Kun is a Chinese-American physicist and pedagogue, born on November 4, 1933 in Shanghai, China, and died on September 23, 2018 in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. From an early age, he showed a passion for science and technology and achieved many excellent academic achievements. After graduating from high school, he decided to study electrical engineering in the UK, and continued his graduate studies while working as an engineer at Standard Telephones & Cables Ltd – a unit specializing in the production of telephones, telegraphs, radio and related equipment of this country.

Around the same time, Cao Kun’s colleague invented the laser in 1960, which impressed and intrigued him. Six years later, shortly after earning his doctorate, he and his collaborator George Hockham published a paper on a fiber made of pure glass, capable of transmitting 1 Gigahertz of information over long distances by applying use of lasers. This research created a sensation in the world of science and information technology at that time.

Dr. Cao now decided to put all his energy into developing his revolutionary technology. In 1977, he launched the first telephone network to transmit signals directly over fiber optic cables. During the 80s, he played the role of overseeing the deployment of fiber optic network projects around the world. It was his work in the 1960s that won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009, paving the way for more than 900 million miles of fiber optic cables with the enormous amount of data globally today.

Research on optical fibers in the 1960s won Gao Kun the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009.

Not only is a researcher with many breakthrough achievements, Cao Con is also a dedicated pedagogue and teacher. He held the position of Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong for nearly a decade (1987 – 1996), and founded the Independent Schools of Hong Kong organization.

Happy birthday to Dr. Cao Con, and thank you for your great research work that contributes to making the world more connected, faster and easier.
