SPAIN GSMA, the organizer of MWC 2020, confirmed that this mobile technology event could not take place due to the outbreak of corona pneumonia (Covid-19).

The announcement was made by GSMA after an emergency meeting on February 12. Initially, the meeting was scheduled to take place on Friday (February 14) but was forced to hold earlier because the number of participating businesses announced their withdrawal from the event.

According to John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA, the cancellation of the Global Mobile Exhibition is “a public health concern”. However, Phonearena said that the lack of a series of key technology companies is the main reason.

Previously, Sony, LG, Amazon, ZTE, Facebook … announced not participating in MWC this year due to the corona virus outbreak, threatening the health of their employees, partners and customers. For the same reason, the major telecom operators, considered the backbone of MWC, have also withdrawn, including AT&T, Orange, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, NTT Docomo, Nokia and Ericsson.

After canceling MWC 2020, GSMA will focus on MWC Shanghai (China) and MWC Los Angeles (USA), which is expected to take place later this year. Meanwhile, MWC in Barcelona (Spain) is likely to reorganize in February next year.

This is the first time in a 33-year history that MWC cannot organize it.

Mobile World Congress is the largest event of the entire mobile industry of the year, taking place every February in Barcelona, ​​attracting thousands of businesses to participate.
