[CES 2020] Intel launches its first DG1 discrete graphics processor

Tram Ho

Intel has dominated the CPU market for many years, and now the giant has officially jumped into the GPU game. At CES 2020, Intel just launched its first discrete GPU graphics processor, codenamed DG1.

Intel did not reveal much details about the DG1 GPU, but demonstrated the Destiny 2 live-play demo on this discrete graphics processor. DG1 is based on Xe architecture, similar graphic architecture with integrated GPUs on the upcoming 10nm Tiger Lake chip.

This is an interesting detail, as speculated by Tom’s Hardware, that the DG1 GPU may be simply a discrete version of the integrated GPU on the Tiger Lake chip. However, Intel says the performance of this GPU is more than double that of previous generations.

However, Intel may find a way to synchronize the CPU and discrete GPU to increase overall performance. And this is also the first step for Intel to be able to produce its own VGA graphics cards. A gunshot erupted to warn the other two VGA giants, Nvidia and AMD.

The absence of its own discrete graphics processor made Intel difficult. Even in 2018, Intel had to agree to work with AMD, to create a generation of Core i5 chips combined with AMD’s GPU.

Intel didn’t say when devices with DG1 discrete GPUs would launch. However, devices equipped with the new 10nm Tiger Lake chip will begin to appear on the market later this year.
