BOE continues to fail in Apple’s latest review, temporarily unable to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 12 series

Tram Ho

Chinese display maker BOE has been doing everything it can to enter Apple’s supply chain. Currently only LG Display and Samsung are supplying OLED screens for the iPhone 12 series. However, according to many sources, BOE may soon join Apple’s display supply chain.

But according to TheLec, the Chinese display maker, BOE continues to be denied orders to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 12 series.

Specifically, BOE’s factory in Chengdu, Sichuan province, is facing problems related to the production line of the OLED screen. This is one of the reasons why the company did not receive the “nod” from Apple. This is also the second time this year BOE has not received the trust of Apple.

Earlier in June, BOE’s factory in Mianyang, Sichuan, suffered the same fate as OLED panel productivity dropped by as low as 20%. Apple began evaluating the Chengdu factory in September, but the review process only lasted about a month and ended in October. BOE now has to wait until the first half of 2021 for Apple to evaluate. re-capacity and proceed to sign an agreement to supply OLED panels.

The BOE will not release the results of the next review until May or June of the following year. If BOE passes the upcoming challenge, Apple could use BOE’s OLED panels for refurbish (refurbish) iPhone 12 models.

After the first failure, BOE reportedly tried to improve the B11 and B7 lines in the second half of this year. The B7 mainly produces panels for smartphone manufacturers in China such as Huawei. However, with the growing US ban on Huawei, BOE certainly needs new customers.

BOE’s B11 and B7 lines will compete directly with each other. In a statement last month, BOE said the B11 line produced about 4 million out of a total of 16 million flexible OLED panels in the first half of this year.

Apple is giving LG Display and BOE a great opportunity through orders for OLED panels. This is also Apple’s main strategy in reducing its dependence on Samsung Display. When BOE supplies Apple with OLED panels, the number of partners will increase to three, and Apple can easily lower the cost of parts without worrying about pressure. It doesn’t seem like this is likely to happen anytime soon, though.

It is likely that a new iPhone equipped with a screen provided by BOE will only appear in Q4 / 2021.
