Why is TikTok so attractive and used by so many young people?

The feeling of happiness when surfing TikTok is real!

You may not know, but the brain will have the opportunity to produce the hormone “happy” – dopamine when surfing social media in general and TikTok in particular. And after each dopamine hit, the brain craves the next, newer, and more dopamine. With this mechanism, the more users surf TikTok, the more they hope to find things that stimulate pleasure, so that the brain produces more dopamine.

According to neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez (Columbia University, New York, USA) said that people are actually searching for dopamine – the “happy” hormone on TikTok. She explains: “When you scroll up and down and come across something that makes you laugh, the brain gets a burst of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released by tyrosin and it creates a feeling of pleasure, excited”.

“When you see something you don’t like, you can quickly switch to something that produces more dopamine,” adds Dr. Hafeez.

Sharing the same view, Professor Julie Albright (University of Southern California, California, USA) shared on: ” When surfing continuously, you will feel comfortable when you are in a state that is supplied with dopamine. It is almost hypnotic. and make you keep watching, keep watching “.

Short but informative and interesting

Not everyone can concentrate for a long time. Some even argue that the human attention span is getting shorter and shorter. Although there are no real research numbers, it is not difficult to see that not only TikTok but other social networks like Instagram or Facebook are attracting the attention of viewers with short videos.

Currently, TikTok has raised the video length limit to 10 minutes, but the previous numbers were only 3 minutes and 1 minute. However, according to many people, the voltage stabilization time, which is easy to attract for a clip on this platform is only 15 seconds. With such short videos, the information provided is either very expensive or short, again TikTok satisfies the curiosity, stimulates viewers.

But whatever the length, there’s a lot to explore on the platform. From cute animals to religion, from entertainment to learning, from finance – getting rich to love – affection,… one can find everything on TikTok.

This is also the reason why Google Search – the most popular search engine today is “threatened” by TikTok.

According to Techcrunch, Prabhakar Raghavan – Senior Vice President, in charge of Google Search has to admit that young users have turned to social networks like Instagram and TikTok when they want to search for something. “According to our research, almost 40% of young people go to TikTok or Instagram when looking for a place to have lunch, without using Google Maps or Google Search,” he said. These results are based on internal Google research with US users between the ages of 18 and 24.

In the country, typical evidence for this replacement is the proliferation of TikTokers specializing in experiencing and evaluating restaurants, tourist attractions, … in the past few years. In the past, when people wanted to know something, people used to ask “sister” Google, but now, just searching on TikTok brings up countless results. Not discussing the authenticity or right and wrong in each experience clip, users will certainly be interested and easily convinced by the actual clips, seeing the headset rather than the “matrix” of information on Google.

Famous dream hug

Fame and the illusion of power is something that has been talked about a lot about TikTokers lately. With just one trending video, anyone can gain thousands of followers on this platform. Since then, if you know how to maintain your attraction, the number of tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions is not impossible.

TikToker with talent, with interesting and interesting content, is famous, but there is also a famous TikToker in a strange way, making netizens wonder. Those are characters who do not possess any outstanding features of beauty or talent but still have millions of followers, a strong fan base and, of course, considerable income. Those are the characters who focus on using offensive tactics to sell goods, to attract followers and donors when livestreaming.

The ease of having both power and income has made many young people dream of becoming TikTok “idols”, TikTok “artists”. They even defy everything, doing bullshit, useless and sometimes toxic content to become famous on this platform. The recent series of trends and jokes on TikTok is an example.

Algorithm “For You”

TikTok uses the For You Page algorithm to deliver the right kind of content you want to see or are interested in or don’t want to see.

Specifically, TikTok finds out users’ preferences by statistics and analysis of the accounts they follow, blocked accounts, location and time spent using the application, content they comment or like, content. send to others, each person’s video content, videos that you are not interested in or have reported,… The investigation relies on every user action on the platform so the more you use TikTok the more , the more it knows the clip viewing routine to display.

In fact, this is not a new algorithm, platforms like Instagram or YouTube have applied it before. However, in TikTok, it becomes special because the platform focuses on providing video diversity, not recommending videos based on views but based on user preferences.

How much time does TikTok take from young people every day?

According to my phone statistics, I use TikTok for 1 hour and 20 minutes a day, not as much as other apps like Instagram, Facebook or Messenger. The time is usually before going to bed. In TikTok, which videos do I like and watch words? From the beginning to the end, the platform will recommend the next videos in that topic. But I am not too caught up, but mostly after watching for a while, my eyes close and then I fall asleep ” – Anh Nhan (20 years old).

My TikTok viewing time is unlucky, some days are about 1 hour, some days I don’t watch. I am not caught up in the way of forgetting to eat and sleep because I still have to go to work in the morning, so I usually sleep before 12 midnight ” – Quang Nguyen (23 years old).

I surf TikTok for about 2 hours / day, not the type of sitting still for 2 hours to watch but scattered. I find TikTok quite attractive but not so much that I can’t stop. Because the platform shows the content I am interested in. If you watch too many people over and over again, you will get bored. Even so, I still have the situation of watching a little bit and then sleeping, but I end up surfing for an hour ” – Ha Tran (22) age).

Every day TikTok takes 40 minutes from me. I don’t have a fixed time frame or time, but whenever I’m free, I’ll surf at that time. I have to admit TikTok is really interesting! Sometimes because I’m busy surfing clips, I’m a bit late in some things. like sleeping later. Or like this morning, I went to work late because I was busy surfing TikTok ” – Nguyen Hai (28 years old).
