TikTok prioritizes displaying videos from beautiful boys and rich people; Say no to ugly, poor people

According to a report from The Intercept , TikTok has asked its content administrators to restrict recommendations to videos from “ugly-looking” people, or filmed in slums or shabby houses.

This information is disclosed through an internal document sent by TikTok to its moderation team, stating some of the rules that the team must follow in order to select videos that suggest to users.

Thereby, this text writes the TikTok censorship team not allowed to suggest videos from:

– People with abnormal body, stout (beer belly, obese), too thin, too short.

– People with ugly faces, wrinkles, scars or deformities.

– Shabby, dilapidated video footage, including slums, rural areas (beautiful natural landscapes can be accepted), dilapidated houses, construction sites. In addition, houses with cracks in the walls, old, dirty and messy decorations will also be disqualified.

Explaining this, TikTok’s text states that the user’s face is the focus of the video, so if they don’t have an attractive appearance, they won’t be able to attract viewers. Similarly, shabby housing estates will “not be suitable for new users because they are not attractive.”

Earlier, similar documents were leaked, showing that TikTok restrained the display of videos from disabled people, LGBT or political content that was detrimental to China.

Responding to The Intercept , TikTok representative said that this rule has been applied to prevent online bullying, but it is no longer used. In addition, TikTok also said it will stop using the team from China to manage foreign content. Before that, all content on TikTok (except the US) was managed by Chinese people.
