Whether you’re taking an online class or working from home, you need a software solution to connect with others. Products like Zoom, Rooms, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet are among the most popular online conferencing solutions available today.
To make it easier for you to choose a service that’s right for you, we’ll compare these three services from their cost to the features they offer.
Zoom is an online conferencing service that you can use to meet everyone via audio or video calls, and it allows you to record those calls. It was originally a service used primarily by businesses (more than half of the Fortune 500 companies reportedly used Zoom in 2019).
However, currently, Zoom has more than 300 million users per day due to the impact of travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
When people talk about Zoom, you’ll often hear phrases like Zoom Meeting or Zoom Room. Zoom meetings refer to online conference meetings held on Zoom, you can join these meetings via webcam or phone. Meanwhile, a Zoom Room is a physical hardware device that allows companies to schedule and launch meetings from their conference rooms.
What makes Zoom so appealing is that it can be easily accessed from a computer or phone. Its key features include the ability to hold free face-to-face meetings, meet with large groups, share your screen or audio, and even change your background image to a custom virtual image.
Zoom has an application available for computers running Windows and macOS operating systems. On mobile devices, you can get the app at the Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS, or it can run directly in the web browser you have.
Zoom can be used on almost any platform such as Apple’s macOs, Microsoft Windows, Chrome OS, Linux distributions, etc. However, Zoom takes up a lot of system resources. Although it does not consume a large portion of random access memory, its high processing demands have a power consumption impact. If used on a mobile or laptop, the device will quickly run out of battery if you are attending an annual conference or an online training class.
Another downside of Zoom is that its overall performance will still depend on Internet connection and bandwidth traffic. On average, it will need between 600MB and 1.70GB of data per hour. Therefore, it is also recommended to use this platform on an unlimited Internet connection plan with download and upload speeds of at least 5 Mbps. If using a mobile connection, it’s quite “sour”!
Zoom’s free plan has no time limit for one-on-one meetings, but with group calling sessions you can only call for up to 40 minutes with 100 participants. Paid plans start at 15USD/month per user.
Microsoft Teams is a chat feature built into Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365). It should be familiar to anyone who uses Microsoft 365 regularly.
However, if your company or organization is a Google Workspace user, it won’t be as appealing. However, Microsoft Teams has a built-in video calling function, so it will certainly grow rapidly in the near future. Recently, Microsoft Teams reached 44 million daily users and is used by hundreds of thousands of businesses, organizations, and schools.
Microsoft Teams is integrated with all Microsoft applications, including Skype and traditional Office applications like Outlook.
Microsoft Teams is designed to help people work together more efficiently while taking advantage of Microsoft 365 apps integration. You can easily set up meetings with calendars, create and share content, easily call members of group,…
For conferences or online learning, Microsoft Teams has the ability to initiate calls with up to 250 members. It also offers screen sharing and call recording. You can see up to 9 participants in a call, and Teams can provide a recording of the meeting right after it’s over.
Microsoft Teams is compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS operating systems, and it’s also available on the web – just like the other Microsoft 365 apps.
Shared data will be messy if you don’t manage it from the beginning. This software has not yet provided a solution to manage the work progress of each person. You can only create up to 100 channels per team. When the limit is exceeded, you only have to delete a few old channels.
In case you want to share data only for a few specific objects or limit viewing and editing, Teams cannot support.
Although included in the Microsoft 365 plan ($5/month/person), Microsoft Teams still has a free version that includes support for up to 300 people. If you use the free plan, you can chat and search unlimitedly. In addition, Microsoft Teams also provides you with 10 built-in applications, 5GB of memory for storage.
3. Google Meet
Renamed from Hangouts Meet, Google Meet is an online conferencing solution built into Gmail, Youtube, and Google Voice. It’s basically a useful and cost-effective platform for small businesses as well as online classroom guests.
Google Meet has a very lightweight, fast interface that allows you to easily manage group video calls of up to 250 people. This online service serves approximately 100 million users per day, including corporate and corporate customers of Google Workspace. And you can easily use Google Meet with your Google account without signing up for Google Workspace.
Google Meet allows up to 250 participants per call, streams for up to 100,000 viewers in a domain, and can save meeting recordings to Google Drive with paid Google Workspace subscribers. With the free plan, you can initiate a basic call for up to 100 participants, with a 60-minute time limit.
Google Workspace organizers can set up calls via Google Calendar, a meeting URL or code, call by phone number, and via dedicated Google Meet hardware such as Chromebox and Chromebase. For users of the Google Workspace Enterprise plan, each meeting has a unique calling phone number.
Previously you could only see four people at a time, but with a recent update, Meet has opened up a new layout, allowing you to see 16 call participants at once. It will allow screen sharing in various forms, and Google continues to strengthen Meet’s security thanks to the Google Cloud infrastructure.
Google Meet is available as an Android and iOS mobile app. You can also access Meet through the Chrome, Microsoft, or Safari web browser.
You must use a Google account to access and use the full functionality. Call duration and number of participants are limited in the free plan. The pretty bad sound filter is also one of the “salient” downsides of this service.
Anyone with a Google account can access Google Meet for free. In addition, more upgraded packages of Google Workspace will be integrated with more applications such as unlimited time, increased number of participants, live streaming.
Messenger Rooms is an expanded version with more features than the current standard Facebook Messenger application video calling. An online meeting room on Messenger Rooms has a maximum of 50 participants and no time limit for use.
Facebook says room owners can set a limit to the number of people who can attend or open it to the public through the invite link even if that person doesn’t have an account on this social network. “You can open and share an online meeting room on Facebook right in the News Feed, in groups or events. Room owners have the choice of who can see the room or join, remove someone from the room, lock it. if you don’t want other people to attend,” explained VP of Messenger Stan Chudnovsky.
Users can still use Messenger to make individual calls as well as group calls, group chats like before. But with the new change, when they select “People” in Messenger, they will see the option to create a room. There will be many different options for users to create an online video meeting room according to their own wishes and purposes.
Call quality is good, with the advantage of adding some features such as AR (augmented reality) filter, virtual background …
A Facebook representative confirmed that the company does not end-to-end encryption of calls as it does with WhatsApp, but confirmed that it does not view or listen to calls, similar to Messenger. The company encourages users to report meeting rooms for violations.
Messenger Rooms is built into Facebook’s Messenger app, and of course it’s available for all devices and operating systems. Free all.
A Facebook account is required, and above all, you are easily distracted when there are too many chat messages from your Facebook friends.
Support to make video calls with up to 50 people and unlimited call time. Call quality is relatively good.
Which service is best for you?
The answer depends on you. Are you a business or a school? You’re probably using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, so use any of the video conferencing apps included in your plan (Google Meet or Microsoft Teams).
Honestly, Messenger Rooms is the fastest and simplest way to start a video call. Zoom will be more convenient for meetings with a large number of participants because it focuses on the user’s online calling experience. And Google Meet is suitable for small businesses, not too many people participating in a meeting. Finally, if you need volume, then Microsoft Teams is the logical choice.
