“You were fired, from now on ChatGPT will replace you”

Tram Ho

In a ranking of people’s dream jobs in Southeast Asian countries, in 4 countries including the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore and Cambodia, people choose their dream job as “writer”. .

I wonder if knowing that that job is likely to one day be overwhelmed by machines, artificial intelligence and even those in the profession who are still wondering about the future of their careers, will they change their minds? ant or not? Or do you still want to keep writing as your dream career?

The appearance of ChatGPT became a big topic of discussion on social networks, related to many professions in life. Many people are pessimistic about the future of the labor market when ChatGPT can complete many work tasks with just a few tens of minutes, which sometimes takes an equivalent employee a few hours or days. In the context of many large companies around the world massively cutting staff, the ability of ChatGPT makes many people gradually lose faith in the stability of work in the near future.

The industrial revolution, mechanization of machines once made the manual labor force nervous when many jobs that were once performed by humans have now been wiped out and replaced by machines. Knowledge workers, which seemed like an “ivory tower” of machines that are hard to shake in the near future, now, people who do jobs such as reporters, IT … are also flooded with worries about the replacement of AI. with the jobs they hold.

Of course, I don’t fully believe that AI or ChatGPT can completely replace humans, especially in the field of writing. Content produced by artificial intelligence can be detected by software, helping to distinguish between human-produced content and machine-produced content. One of the most fundamental problems with ChatGPT is ChatGPT’s own plagiarism. When a user enters the same command/question, there is a high chance that ChatGPT will produce the same answers. Imagine two newspaper pages with the same problem and both use ChatGPT to support writing, readers can easily detect the similarity if the editor does not elaborate and edit the content thoroughly. Using ChatGPT in writing is also considered plagiarism – a taboo in many countries around the world. If you carry an entire paragraph written by ChatGPT and use your pseudonym, it is no different from you stealing other people’s brains and deceiving the reader.

Ethical standards cannot keep up with the rapid development of technology, but from the perspective of using ChatGPT in circumvention, many people consider that behavior to be an unethical practice.

However, between ethics and profit, which side will companies tilt their balance? I can’t answer with certainty, but if there are companies that lean on ethics, there are also companies that are willing to let themselves down on the profit side. And when there is an article produced by ChatGPT, it means that an employee is sharing less responsibility for AI.

Recently, I was introduced to a job as a content editor by a friend. When I asked again “who wrote this?”, my friend did not hesitate to answer “ChatGPT”. They do not hire me to write, nor hire others to write anymore when the work they need to outsource now is just hiring someone to edit ChatGPT’s articles.

“The writing is good enough,” my friend said.

When an AI article gets a good enough review and just needs to be re-edited, I find my optimism is limited. Writing is a very large market, but just having ChatGPT cheat on one area every day means that many people will lose their jobs.

I have also tried many tasks with ChatGPT, from writing press releases, writing Facebook posts, to writing promotional taglines… If quality is a topic of discussion, quantity and speed are what ChatGPT has surpassed. passed dozens of employees in brainstorming sessions. As I often tell my employees, the point of “brainstorming” is to generate as many ideas as possible, there are no “good” or “bad” ideas – every idea can be used in the future. someday if we know how to exploit it properly.

And in less than 5 minutes, ChatGPT gave me 20 tagline ideas for a product.

However, we will not be able to change the fact that technology will continue to develop and the waves of ChatGPT 1.0, 2.0…. The new ones will gradually improve the current tasks. A boss will not say straight to the face that “you are fired, from now on ChatGPT will replace you” but there will be a way for you to understand it.

When society accepts the existence of ChatGPT, writers must accept “symbiosis” with ChatGPT. Or not, the one who gets fired will be you, not artificial intelligence products that don’t care about a job or reputation.

So how do writers, content creators, journalists need to change themselves to coexist with ChatGPT and AI?

Creative writing or the art of storytelling should not be made up of a formula or pattern so that every story develops along a universal structure. As a chess player, I understand that artificial intelligence can calculate millions of variations for each game, but the necessary condition is “input data”. This is very different from writing when it is difficult to provide ChatGPT with enough input in creating literature. Therefore, no matter how many stories ChatGPT suggests to you, there will always be better ideas in the mind of each writer. Moreover, empathy with the writer and narrator is a characteristic of listeners when exposed to stories. It is each person’s very personal experiences that give the story the human connection emotions that artificial intelligences can hardly do, at least in the near future. Sometimes a good article or content doesn’t just come from the standard of language or grammar – it comes from the vibrations of the reader’s feelings with the author, sometimes clumsy, clumsy, but that’s the point. what everyone goes through. The realm of literature is still a land where artificial intelligence can hardly surpass humans, no matter how sophisticated and complex the tasks are.

Therefore, writers need to pay more attention to the literature in commercial content, including storytelling elements in sales and advertising content. If the content based on keywords and algorithms of platforms is likely to be overtaken by AI, creative content will still be a good place for writers to focus on developing. However, the job market will be more intense, with a large number of layoffs, and a highly categorical nature.

Writers need to diversify content genres. The flexibility to change will help you expand your job opportunities in today’s competitive times. Instead of just writing Facebook social posts, is it time to try harder content like journalism, public relations? Or you can catch up on new trends: Will the advent of ChatGPT create a new generation of editors exclusively dedicated to working with ChatGPT? Technology in the 21st century has created many new careers, like how social media content creators emerged when the Internet became an essential part of life. ChatGPT can also continue to create new jobs in the content area.

Original content will be increasingly featured in the face of the massive development of ChatGPT when ethical issues are still of great concern to many people. Looking at the essence of ChatGPT, it’s like any other challenge writers need to overcome, like the way we overcame it when Google made it easy to find information, or when the newspaper era was announced. The network usurped the throne, leaving many jobs in the past now only memories. Platforms may be new, features may be new, but the questions that come with ChatGPT have been asked for centuries: What can a writer do to stay resilient to the emergence of new tools? What everyone needs to do, apart from whining and getting tired, is to continue to improve their own abilities.

In symbiosis with ChatGPT, I realized that artificial intelligence can spark new ideas, help me see limitations and differences in how AI creates and content, focusing on areas of ChatGPT content that have not yet been created. may replace the writer in the near future.

Sharing in an interview in the Global Times, Chinese writer Chun Shanlei (pseudonym) once tried to give a few keywords to AI to write a paragraph. This is the result she got.

“Miss Jian looked at the man standing next to her with trepidation. The tone of the order wasn’t like the way a husband talks to his wife. In an instant, she knew that this wasn’t a real marriage… “.

Shanlei laughed, saying that she gave this passage a 7 out of 10.

7/10 points – means that there is still a huge space for writers, who continue to work. Or perhaps, Shanlei is just being generous because she knows that the future where AI can steal the jobs of writers is still a long way off.

I also agree with Shanlei. At least, I don’t know anyone who got fired because of ChatGPT. Luckily it is.
