Will the US lose to China in the ‘core front’ of 5G, AI, microelectronics?

Titled ” Mid-Decade Challenges to National Competitiveness “, the first report, published September 12, identifies three “core battlegrounds” for technological superiority: microelectronics electronics, 5th generation wireless technology (5G) and artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the report, the period from 2025 to 2030 will be a critical period for the new technology race, in which Beijing can gain an edge if its plan works.

SCSP director Ylli Bajraktari said: ” If we do not act together in the three core battlefields, the power will not belong to the countries at the forefront of democracy today. Everything will happen in China. ” .

China has put a lot of effort into these areas, the researchers warn. They argue that the United States and its allies are at a “dangerous” line in developing technology, an important “battlefield” in shaping the future of geopolitics.

Mr. Bajraktari noted that China has moved much faster in 5G technology. At the same time, he warned the US ” cannot catch up ” if it continues to do as it is currently in the 5G and microelectronics supply chains.

” China is the biggest economic rival, technological peer, most capable, and greatest military threat to the United States ,” said Nadia Schadlow, a member of the SCSP’s advisory board.

Analytical Report: The United States must act across multiple public policy areas to invest in its own technological advantage, strengthen its technology-industrial base, and democratically deploy disruptive technologies, and responsibility.

The United States has many advantages, such as a global leadership in talent, technology companies, financial markets, an innovation culture and a network of alliances.

The report also identifies six challenges that the United States must overcome to restore its competitiveness: exploiting forms of innovation; restore sources of economic – technological advantages; developing an American approach to AI governance; re-establishing America’s global leadership position in the age of technological competition; meet new requirements in future conflict and defense; simultaneously collect and process intelligence in an age of data-driven competition.
