Data are obtained from the SCImago Country Rankings and from the World Bank.

1. America

Number of scientific articles: 726,552.

Total h-Index score: 2,711

Currently, the US occupies the No. 1 position, far ahead of other countries in science by a huge gap.

The leading research institutions are Harvard University, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Top US corporations involved in R&D include Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Meta.

3. Germany

Leading research bodies include the Helmholtz Society, the Max Planck Institute for Research and Professionals, and the Leibniz Society.

4. Canada

Total h-Index score: 1,381

Canada has a strong focus on the agricultural, health and environmental sciences. It also has a world-class education system that produces some of the best researchers in the world.

The top three institutions are the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia and McGill University.

5. France

Total h-Index score: 1,352

France’s contribution to the global scientific effort is considerable in the fields of physics, medicine, and chemistry.

Some of the top institutions include the French National Center for Scientific Research, the National Institute for Health and Medical Research and the Sorbonne University.

6. Holland

Number of scientific articles: 74,317

Total h-Index score: 1,206

The top three research institutes – Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam and Hubrecht Institute – are globally recognized for their academic prestige.

The Netherlands is also considered one of the most advanced countries in agricultural science.

The top three research institutions in the country are the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland.

Japan’s electronic engineering contribution to the world is the third highest, comprising 8% of global production.

Japan’s top academic/research institutions include the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Osaka University.

10. Switzerland

Number of scientific articles: 57,331

Total h-Index score: 1.142

There are 4.3 scientific articles per 1,000 Swiss citizens. The average number of citations per paper is 1.60.

The two leading research institutes are the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of Zurich.

11. China

Total h-Index score: 1,112

China is the second largest economy in the world, with a GDP of $18 trillion as of 2021.
