What is the Content ID that makes BH Media able to copyright the National Anthem on YouTube?

Recently, musician Giang Son received a notice of complaint from YouTube regarding the copyright of a song she composed herself. The female musician and many other artists expressed frustration when their song was copyrighted, because a media unit, BH Media, confirmed the owner of the video on YouTube.

In particular, the Vietnamese online community made waves when VTV said that the national mourning video of General Vo Nguyen Giap broadcast on VTV1 or the National Anthem was also owned by BH Media on YouTube.

Not owning the copyright of songs and videos, but BH Media is the first unit to attach Content ID to products on YouTube. This makes the owners again infringers when posting their content on YouTube. So what is Content ID?

Content ID is a tool for copyright protection on YouTube.

For content creators on YouTube, Content ID is very familiar and uses copyright markers. This is the technical system used to determine the legitimacy of content that users post on YouTube.

Content ID uses technology to identify images, sounds, and automatically compare the content the owner subscribes to with the posted content. If it matches, this video will be copyrighted. Producers can monitor and choose to block, remove or take ad revenue from the infringing video. This is considered an effective method of detecting pirated videos on YouTube.

However, this automatic infringement detection flags videos with content that matches the copyrighted video. Therefore, the advantage will go to those who claim the work on YouTube via Content ID.

Copyright owners can use Content ID to identify and manage their content on YouTube. Videos uploaded to YouTube are scanned against a database of files submitted to the system by the content owner.

When a user uploads a video containing copyright-protected content, it may be subject to a Content ID claim. Notifications are automatically generated when an uploaded video matches another video (or part of another video) in YouTube’s Content ID system.

Copyright owners can take action when the content in a YouTube video matches a work they own. When the system finds a video with a match, it will receive a Content ID claim.

If a video match is detected, copyright owners can choose to set up Content ID to block uploads that match a work they own; allows claimed content to continue to work on YouTube to run ads. In this case, the advertising revenue goes to the copyright owners of the claimed content.

To register for Content ID, account holders must register to join networks (multi-channel networks) that protect content. This is the way that is being used the most by content creators because the networks all have a well-developed Content ID system, giving many benefits to users.

Thus, in this case, BH Media (which is a network) has pre-claimed YouTube. Therefore, subsequent videos that have duplicate content will be marked as copyrighted by the system.
