Every year, thousands of companies, journalists and analysts from around the world flock to Las Vegas, USA to attend CES, the largest annual technology exhibition worldwide since the year. 1967. However, don’t expect to witness the most popular devices at CES like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Companies like Apple and Samsung often organize their own events to launch products.

But CES is important because it is a venue for important trends that shape the entire technology landscape that year and the years that follow. According to Avi Greengart, founder and analyst at research firm Techsponential, CES is “a great place to spot trends and see what ecosystems are growing”.

In recent years, CES has been flooded with smart home devices that can respond to voices, versatile robots, futuristic cars, and attractive TVs. This trend is expected to continue in 2020. Although we see the same trend repeated over many CES seasons, according to Tuong Nguyen, senior analyst at Gartner, judging them as “the foundation stones for towards something even better. ”

With that in mind, let’s see what CES 2020 is worth waiting for? CES 2020 officially takes place from 7/1 to 10/1.

Many 8K TVs and micro LED screens

Eye-catching TVs from Samsung, Sony, LG, etc. have dominated CES in recent years, such as Samsung’s “The Wall” micro LED TV or LG’s rolled-up television. CES 2020 is no exception. Certainly, technologies like 8K displays and micro LED will continue to appear.

Micro LED is a relatively new type of display technology, bringing the advantages of an OLED screen such as high contrast, true black, but cheaper prices. 8K is the evolution of 4K, the standard for today’s UHD TVs. According to Patrick Moorhead, president and analyst of research firm Moor Insight & Strategy, TV 8K will become more popular, not expensive as before.

Technology of self-driving cars, smart cars, motorbikes / bicycles

Major car manufacturers such as Hyundai, Toyota and Byton will attend CES 2020. Here, they can show how the 5G network generation will affect the smart car experience. We have the opportunity to witness the second tier of self-driving cars on some high-end models. (Learn the levels of self-driving cars here)

Besides, CES 2020 also has countless other vehicles such as electric motorcycles, electric skis. This is not a new trend that started a few years ago but only developed in 2020.

Many companies challenge Apple in the wearables market

Apple is leading the wearable market, but many competitors will want to challenge “apples”. According to Moorhead, the whole market is looking for ways to compete with apple. Apple, though selling more expensive products, dominates market share, which is strange.

The popularity of AirPods paired with Qualcomm’s SoC chip for wireless headsets will undoubtedly bolster the development of this product line. Qualcomm chips help companies quickly develop smaller Bluetooth wearables. Greengart thinks 2020 could be the peak year of wireless headsets.

In addition, there are dozens of wearables geared towards fitness and other health monitoring – a trend that has been familiar in recent years at CES. It can measure daily calorie intake along with other metrics like sleep, exercise.

Google, Amazon, Samsung and the smarthome war

One of the biggest topics at CES recently is bringing voice assistants from Amazon and Google into everything from washing machines to microwaves and televisions. As voice assistants became more powerful at CES, companies like Amazon and Google – often not significantly present at CES – began to draw attention. In 2019, Google even established its own theme area in the exhibition to attract visitors to Google Assistant.

Above all, CES is a “show”.

CES stands for Consumer Electronics Show. It is a show where big and small companies flaunt their products and show the world what they are investing in time and resources.

In 2020, the tech world is in the middle of a journey to find a new breakthrough, similar to the transition from regular phones to modern smartphones. According to Nguyen, we still haven’t found the next big thing. Many companies are interested in augmented reality glasses and wearables. However, the breakthrough is unlikely to appear this year and has to wait at least a few more years.
