Want to “Download more RAM” for smartphone? Samsung just released a feature for you to do it

For years now, there’s been a joke that goes: “Need more RAM on your smartphone? Just download more!” There are even apps on the Play Store and a website for “Download more RAM”.

Since RAM is a hardware aspect of your phone, you can’t upgrade via software. However, a new feature called Samsung RAM Plus is currently rolling out on the Galaxy A52S, which will allow users to “add” RAM to their device.

RAM Plus essentially uses part of the phone’s internal memory and converts it into “RAM” up to 4GB, meaning virtual RAM. In certain situations, this may increase the performance of your phone. However, since it’s virtual rather than physical RAM, don’t expect a big change in performance. In some situations, it can even degrade performance on smartphones.

This is not a new feature, but Samsung RAM Plus gives users an easy way to control it, something not too many other companies do. OPPO also has a similar system.

It’s unclear if this feature will appear on other Samsung devices. It might make sense on lower-end phones, but probably won’t be necessary on flagships with 8GB of RAM or more.
