Vietnam is in third place on spam mails

The situation of spam emails in the third quarter of this year showed that there has a lot of malicious attachments in emails which sent to invite people to watch the video of Ice Bucket movement Challenge (pouring ice bucket on the head).

Moreover, there are also a series of spam with fraudulent content about discounted and the donated products of Apple’s new iPhone is also exploited to attach malicious code by cybercriminals.

The most noticeable figures

• Percentage of spam in email traffic increased by 1.7 percent in the third quarter against that of the previous quarter, it has got an average of 66.9%. Three main sources of delivering spam includes USA (14%), Russia (6.1%) and Vietnam is in third place with 6%.

• In particular, Trojan.JS.Redirector.adf – Trojan redirects the user to a malicious site is currently ranked first in the ranking of malicious attachments detected by Kaspersky Lab.

• Currently, Andromeda Malware is stay on top of the ranking of the most popular malware family, which accounts for 12.35% in the detection of Kaspersky Lab. They help criminals control victim’s computer secretly. The second place with 10.59% belong to Zeus / Zbot Malware for the purpose of attacking online banking.

• The crooks are target to the online financial services, which accounts for 38.23% in the detection of Kaspersky Lab, an increase of 13.39% over the second quarter.

• The crooks attacked banks, increasing 6.16%. This figure showed that the fastest growth in the type of financial scam. Most of the detection of finding fraud in the various types of payment systems targeted to PayPal users (32.08%), Visa (31.51%) and American Express (24.83%).

In addition, those spammers start concerning about exploiting the popularity of Apple’s iPhone smartphone. The evidence is they start sending messages to iPhone 6 before it was released by Apple at the beginning of September. Accordingly, this smartphone is introduced as a prize for the contest and different surveys. There are also scam emails talking about great discounts for this phone. Of course all of them are fake emails and no truth. They are only used to attract users to a fraudulent software or a web service that spammers want to develop.

Ice Bucket Challenge – IBC is a challenging game to promote awareness of the disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Players will be poured a ice water bucket on their heads, recorded and posted on the social network and are entitled to challenge one or more person that do this. Within 24 hours later, the challenged person must to answer. Related to this trend, Kaspersky Lab experts detected malicious spam of inviting victims to watch the video of participants. However attachments in email contain Backdoor.Win32.Androm.euop malware which allow criminals to control the compromised computer.
