A young man on a United Airlines flight departing from San Francisco used Apple’s AirDrop to send “inappropriate photos” to other passengers, prompting the evacuation of all passengers and staff from the plane. .

According to Christopher J. Beale, who said his mother was on that flight, an unnamed young man sent pictures of an airgun to nearby iPhones via AirDrop. According to Beale, this young man also made threats.

According to Doug Yakel, an airport spokesman, United Airlines Flight 2167 was about to leave the gate when several passengers reported the incident. Everyone on board was forced to evacuate and undergo a screening process “out of an abundance of caution,” Yakel said.

Initial investigation showed that this was just a joke by this person. The photos were determined to have been taken a day earlier and not at the airport, and the young man had no gun on him. The passengers re-boarded after officials conducted a security check of the entire plane, and the person was banned from flying. It is unclear if he faces other legal problems.

Apple’s AirDrop Feature

How the authorities identified this young man among the customers has not been made clear. iOS users can anonymously send pictures, videos and other media through AirDrop simply by changing the name of their device in the system settings. There is a theory that the perpetrator forgot this important step or simply wasn’t afraid of being caught.

AirDrop file recipients are shown a preview of the image or video, which they can accept or decline. This way of working has caused problems in the past, as pranksters can use the feature to send bad content to their victims.

Users can secure AirDrop and prevent unwanted photos from being received by limiting AirDrop to detect known contacts. First, open Control Center, then long-press the Bluetooth icon and tap the AirDrop icon. Select Contacts Only or Receiving Off.
