Twitter’s turn to join the TikTok deal

The Wall Street Journal report said Twitter had preliminary discussions about “merging” with TikTok, making the social networking platform the newest partner for the popular video-sharing app. However, the WSJ report also said, it is not clear whether Twitter intends to pursue the acquisition of TikTok and any such deal could face major hurdles.

The biggest challenge for any deal with TikTok is the Trump administration’s decision on August 6, blocking the processing of transactions from ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, across the United States. The decision will take effect within the next 45 days.

The Trump administration sees the Chinese application as a potential threat to national security, although there is no evidence that TikTok or ByteDance shares US data with the Chinese government. TikTok said they are planning to appeal Trump’s decision to the US court.

So far, Microsoft is the only company publicly intent on acquiring this video-sharing platform. The WSJ report said that TikTok considers Microsoft to accept any deal, while Twitter is considered as an option for long-term cooperation. Twitter is much smaller than Microsoft, so the WSJ source said that the social networking platform is less likely to encounter antitrust scrutiny like Microsoft. Twitter, however, doesn’t have as much money as Microsoft to pursue any acquisitions.

Currently Twitter is declining to comment on this, a representative of TikTok said the company declined to comment on market rumors.
