Twitter continues to lay off 4,400 employees, without a word

Tram Ho

Recently, Twitter’s full-time employees revealed to CNBC that a large number of employees of the company’s third-party contractor were abruptly terminated last weekend.

According to Platformer, an estimated 4,400 of Twitter’s 5,500 contract workers have been laid off. Notably, the majority of these people did not receive any notifications. They only learned this after discovering they no longer had access to email, employee chat rooms on the Slack platform, and other internal working systems.

Platformer revealed that this round of layoffs includes Twitter employees in the US, India and employees globally working in a number of areas such as content moderation, marketing, engineering, etc.

According to Platformer reporter Casey Newton, the cuts are expected to have a significant impact on content moderation and the core infrastructure services that keep the Twitter website running. “Everyone is stunned with this company decision,” Newton wrote on his personal Twitter account.

This is the next major employee cleanup since Elon Musk bought the company on October 28 and laid off about half of Twitter employees. At this time, Musk and Twitter have not responded to any requests for comment regarding the matter.

Additionally, current Twitter employees say the company has laid off its entire internal communications team. They joke that the media that cover Twitter every day is now partly helping to fulfill the role of the group that has been fired.

Earlier, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey apologized for growing the company “too fast” – a day after Twitter conducted mass layoffs.

As of June 30, 2013, shortly before its IPO, Twitter had about 2,000 employees, according to documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Meanwhile, by the end of last year, the company reported the number of full-time employees had grown to about 7,500.

On November 4, Twitter fired about 3,700 employees by email to cut costs. Musk said that “there is no other choice” because Twitter is losing $ 4 million a day because brands stop advertising.

However, just a few days later, Twitter had to invite some employees back to work because of “wrong” layoffs, according to Bloomberg. Specifically, the company realized that it had “fallen” a few people or didn’t realize their experience was essential to building the features Musk wanted for the platform.

It seems that Twitter has not really stabilized since Musk took over. On November 5, the company started rolling out the new paid verification system, but just a day later, it is said to have postponed the release of the feature until after the US midterm elections.

Since taking over, Musk said he’s sold billions of dollars worth of stock in his Tesla to “save” Twitter. On November 12, the billionaire mentioned the possibility that Twitter could go bankrupt when the platform fell into chaos with warnings from US regulators and the departure of a series of senior executives.
