Trying to play games on MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip, reviewer exclaims “What a disaster”

Tram Ho

Apple’s new MacBook Pros are performance monsters. The M1 Pro and M1 Max processors inside them are both huge leaps in processing power and graphics compared to the previous M1 chip.

But those are the benchmark scores in general, and for the ability to play games on powerful machines, this is a disaster. Thanks to having both a 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, Tomsguide news site had the opportunity to test the gaming capabilities of these devices and they were surprised at how poorly they actually played. of these machines.

First of all, it’s important to note that these MacBooks don’t natively install Windows games – not only different operating system platforms, but now also different processor platforms. One way to do this is to use Parallels Desktop for Mac software – it provides a virtualized environment for Mac computers to install Windows software – so MacBooks with M1 chips can install Windows software. AAA game.

Unfortunately, being able to install doesn’t mean running them smoothly, even with a 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M1 Max chip. Launching the game is also very difficult. That’s not to mention that many games can’t even be installed despite using Parallels.

For example, the titles Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, DiRT 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Red Dead Redemption 2. Borderlands 3 can be installed but not run. Some other titles are luckier than Far Cry New Dawn, Metro Exodus and Grand Theft Auto V – when Tomsguide can be installed as well as playable. However, 3DMark tests cannot give accurate results of benchmark scores.

This is not surprising given that Parallels is not native software designed for game installation. Even for games that run on Parallels, this is not the ideal solution. The fact that not all games can run on these powerful devices is clear evidence that Apple’s new MacBook Pros are not suitable for gaming.

Although I expected that result, this is still really disappointing compared to the GPU power of the M1 Max. However, the problem is not with Apple’s processor platform, but mainly because these games are not optimized for MacOS.

Apple also provides a list of AAA games that can be played on MacOS, the most notable of which are Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Borderlands 3. Indeed, these games perform very well on the MacBook Pro. 16-inch with M1 Max chip when Borderlands 3 reached 40fps at 1080p while Shadow of the Tomb Raider also reached 85fps. There aren’t many such titles on MacOS, though.

The GPU platform of the M1 Max and M1 Pro chips seems so new that AAA games can hardly be optimized for it at the moment. So until more games are optimized for MacOS, current and future Macs won’t be the ones that deliver the best gaming experience.
