This is an SSD specially designed to make your computer “play music” better

Tram Ho

Listening to music is one of the basic needs of users when using a computer. Along with the development of technology, audio devices also receive more outstanding improvements to bring better and better sound quality. A sound card will always bring the best and most complete experience to your computer.

For audiophiles, the term refers to those who are “enthusiastic about the most realistic sound reproduction process”, audio equipment and components are always a top priority. They are willing to spend a lot of money to satisfy their passion to get the most perfect sound quality. And the new SSD drive below will surely make them astound and nod in satisfaction.

The world’s first (and only) NVMe SSD designed to improve sound quality, claims user darkforce on the Audiophile Style forum.

Specifically, this is the product of a programmer nicknamed darkforce, posted on the Audiophile Style forum in April. This NVMe SSD has a capacity of 1TB with many optimized designs to provide better 3D sound and “more lifelike that no other SSD on the market today can do or do close to”.

The specifications of this SSD are also quite impressive. It has a capacity of 1TB, or 333GB in pSLC mode – also a mode that improves sound quality. It also has an external clock oscillator, Audionote capacitors, better copper PCB isolation, gold-plated connectors, and even an external 5V input power supply.

This parameter is fine if we need to process analogue signals. The more carefully the electronic details of the devices are taken care of, the more the analogue sound quality will usually improve. Meanwhile, the physical storage feature parts are not too affected in this regard. In addition, there are many other parts that directly affect the audio transmission from the SSD to the user’s ear.

The biggest problem with this idea is that SSDs store binary data (0 and 1). These sequences of 0s and 1s will not be interfered with or changed until passed to the audio processing unit of the PC or DAC, where they are converted to an analogue signal. That is also where will directly affect the level of sound fidelity, and at this point, the SSD will be “outlined” and no longer relevant.

Some members of the Audiophile Style forum believe that their ears can actually tell the difference between the sound quality of this SSD and that of conventional drives. Meanwhile, PC Gamer editor Chris Szewczyk says he’s been using Klipsch Reference speakers for more than 10 years, with the PC connected to a Rotel amp via S/PDIF, so this SSD won’t work. has little effect on what comes out of my speakers. So the question is: Is darkforce’s product really worthwhile and necessary in practice?
