The US ban causes Huawei to decrease by more than 81% of smartphone shipments in 2021

Tram Ho

In 2019, Huawei is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world with 240.6 million smartphones shipped, second only to Samsung (298 million) and above Apple (198.1 million). In the middle of that year, for security reasons, the US put Huawei on a “black list”, preventing this manufacturer from participating in the US supply chain without the permission of the Department of Commerce.

In 2020, Huawei may still be in third place with 188.5 million smartphones shipped, but by 2021, the US ban has shown a great impact on Huawei.

According to data from Omdia, the number of smartphones shipped by Huawei in 2021 has decreased by 81.6% to 35 million units. Huawei’s market share worldwide will drop from 15% in 2020 to just 3% in 2021.

Also according to Omdia, Honor, after separating from Huawei, has shipped 39.8 million smartphones, helping this brand to rank 8th, one level higher than Huawei.

Topping the ranking of smartphone shipments in 2021 is still Samsung, followed by Apple, the third position now belongs to Xiaomi. These numbers show how badly Huawei has been affected by the US ban. From not being able to use Google services, to not being able to produce Kirin chips, has made Huawei lose its appeal in the eyes of consumers.
