Deep Entity Classification is a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that helps Facebook analyze billions of suspicious accounts.

Facebook has just shared the tools to help social networks find fake accounts. The company applies a new method called Deep Entity Classification (DEC), proving exceptional efficiency.

DEC is a machine learning model, which not only considers the activity of the suspicious account but also assesses all relevant information, including the behavior of the accounts and pages on which the suspicious account interacts. Facebook says the number of fake and fraudulent accounts has dropped by 27%.

So far, DEC has helped Facebook eliminate more than 6.5 billion fake accounts that fraudsters and other bad guys created or wanted to create in 2019. Most were “caught up” in the account creation process. Even when opening accounts successfully, they are detected by Facebook’s automated systems before being reported by users.

This is where DEC works. It analyzes about 20,000 points related to each individual, for example, the suspicious account’s friends activity, even the friend request from another fake account. The goal is to combat pretending to be real users of fake accounts. According to Facebook, spammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in deceiving automated systems. Therefore, DEC had to analyze further to find out.

This is especially important for Facebook as the 2020 US presidential election is nearing.
