The robot reads the application and says I should be unemployed

The recruitment department of many companies has long silently put AI tools into operation. Your profile may have been ignored by artificial intelligence without your knowledge.

According to my preliminary calculations, LinkedIn users have an average of 630 connections. But I only have 106. This is not surprising because I do not care much about maintaining my LinkedIn profile. I did freelance writing while I was in school, so I never really had to “work” like everyone else.

When I heard about a new AI tool, developed by top employers with the aim of improving LinkedIn profiles and resumes, I was curious to see how it could improve the profile (CV). His forgotten.

Startup Resume Worded is an AI-supported platform with information on profile and LinkedIn profiles. It will offer free advice on how to improve your profile to increase your chances of being employed.

According to robots, I should be unemployed

Curious, I uploaded my resume to this online AI tool. The results show that I only have 26/100 points. “Your resume needs to be greatly improved,” these words are bolded on my transcript.

I despise AI because I do not include data in my resume, there is no quantification of my achievements. According to this tool, using statistics in resumes is essential to passing interviews at leading companies.

For example, Resume Worded suggests that I add things like “The customer referral program I developed and implemented, resulting in a 50% increase in sales and $ 2 million in revenue.”

I have to admit, I was very impressed with this advice. I never thought I would quantify my accomplishments but obviously this would add credibility to my profile. As a freelance journalist, providing statistics of article views as well as comments and likes on Facebook can convince editors.

Other proposals are less useful. My buzzwords evaluation computer (my keywords to describe your role, for example active members) are not effective. Robots think that I experience little, but rewriting is too long.

In addition to a resume, Resume Worded also reviews Linkedin profiles. I don’t need artificial intelligence to realize that my profile is worthless because I don’t have much investment. So I tested a more impressive profile: Barack Obama’s LinkedIn page.

Worded Resume gave him 61 out of 100 points. “A good start, but there is still room for improvement” is a benefit for Obama’s transcript. The title of Obama – the former President of the United States – is the only part of his profile that deserves to be praised by a computer. It has recognizable, consistent length elements and contains a minimum amount of keywords.

The rest of Obama’s profile needs further improvement. His summary is too short, while the other parts are too long. The former president should say something about his current job list, because there is no current job mentioned in his LinkedIn profile.

Even if you don’t have a job, consider adding a title to the job you’re looking for. Because most employers look at positions to find candidates. That’s why, former President Obama should add a “freelance practice” title and not be “unemployed”.

In many HR departments, AI tools have been used for a long time. Photo: HBM.

In some cases robots are actually smarter than humans. When we exploit AI to detect skin cancer, the diagnosis is made faster and with greater accuracy than human doctors. But when it comes to the job market, I doubt “algorithm-based intelligence” can improve my chances.

Currently, the tool primarily considers the number of words per section in the CV and the amount of keywords used. So is the profile enough keyword good?

According to Farid van Mastbergen, an AI recruiter, human employers clearly understand Obama does not need a current job list to be recruited. However, an AI-supported platform based on records it has seen cannot be perceived as such. In other words, humans can filter and evaluate exceptions better than AI support tools.

What if I let AI write my CV?

Word Resume is a relatively new tool that helps job seekers get noticed by employers. However, in many HR departments, AI tools have been put to use for a long time. Some employers use the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to help source, screen and organize candidate information.

Similar to the way CV Resume Worded, these HR technologies search for keywords and quantitative knowledge in accordance with the company’s recruitment criteria. The correct resume is passed on to personnel (human) staff and an appointment interview for verification.

According to Van Mastbergen, using AI to write and evaluate resumes will not work because it does not let people know anything. Robotic “writers” know exactly what will convince “robot judges”, but that doesn’t mean it will provide useful information to humans.

People will still be the deciding factor of whether or not you will be employed. Photo: BBC.

However, information filtered by AI is also valuable and helps shorten the time to find candidates. Therefore, the potential of artificial intelligence in headhunting is very high.

Robots will have better questioning skills, allowing them to predict human behavior based on someone’s personal data. Just like Google knows more about shopping behavior than ourselves, the future AI can offer in-depth reviews if someone suits the job.

While AI is a new tool for recruitment and staffing systems, the process of finding jobs has not changed too much. Employers are still looking for employees who are suitable for the company culture, have the necessary experience and skills and are willing to stick.

The bigger question is, how much do we want AI to determine our value in the job market? From a more personal perspective, I will take the hint of Resume Worded, add some achievements to create quantitative value. But to be honest, I didn’t expect to get 500 more connections soon if only more of that. Anyway, the number is still just a number.
