The report shows that the iPhone 12 is slower than most Android smartphones in 5G / 4G speed test

The latest Opensignal report shows the overall picture of the 5G / 4G performance of the iPhone 12 series compared to Android smartphones in the US. Most of the 25 fastest 5G smartphones belong to Samsung.

While the iPhone 12 had 5G speeds that were 2.3 times higher than the iPhone 4G, Apple’s first 5G iPhones ranked bottom and behind 25 other Android smartphones, in the download speed test.

Opensignal measured the average download speed of 5G / 4G networks in the US across all smartphones. As a result, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 comes in at No. 1, with average download speeds of 56 Mb / s. Samsung also accounts for 60% of the 25 smartphones with the highest average download speeds.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 is not included in this rating. iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have average download speeds of 36.9 and 36.2 Mb / s. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have average download speeds of 29.6 and 32.9 Mb / s.

In the past, Apple was always inferior to its Android competitors at 4G speeds, because of the use of Intel’s modem chips. After switching to 5G, Apple used Qualcomm’s modem chip, giving it a 2.3-fold increase over the previous speed.

The chart below shows how Apple has narrowed the gap, but still lags behind all Android competitors.

Apple’s iPhone 12 line has been equipped with the same Qualcomm modem chip as other Android smartphones, even supporting the highest speed mmWave band. So it’s unclear why the speed of the iPhone 12 is still lower than other Android smartphones.

According to author Ian Fogg, head of reports at Opensignal, the cause may be due to other components. Because the 5G modem chip is not the only factor that determines the speed of the 5G network connection, it also depends on other factors such as the antenna design or the radio frequency control chip.

Because the Galaxy S21 is already Samsung’s 3rd generation of 5G smartphones, while the iPhone 12 is Apple’s first generation. Therefore, Apple will have to improve more to be able to increase the speed of 5G network connections on its iPhones. However, for users, the difference is not too large, nor does it seriously affect the 4G or 5G connection experience.
