South Korea had approximately 11 million fifth-generation (5G) mobile network users by the end of November 2020, according to newly released data. Specifically, the Ministry of Science and Information Technology of Korea said that the country had 10.9 million 5G subscribers, accounting for 15.5% of the total 70.5 million mobile phone subscribers.

Previously, the October report of South Korea recorded the number of 5G subscribers reaching 9.98 million people, an increase of about 700,000 subscribers compared to September.

The number of 5G subscribers in South Korea has increased rapidly, as Apple’s iPhone 12 models hit the market.

South Korea was the first country to commercialize 5G networks last April. Theoretically, 5G networks could reach speeds up to 20 times faster than 4G LTE. Of course, the actual network speed is not as such.

Recent reports show that South Korea’s 5G network is still much slower than promised. The average 5G download speed in the country is only 690.47 Mbps, which is only four times faster than the current 4G LTE speeds.

Korean mobile carriers are currently preparing to deploy new technologies, such as creating a standalone 5G version, or applying millimeter-wave bands, to increase transmission quality and speed.

Meanwhile, Korea’s number of 4G LTE subscribers continued to decline, now only 53.3 million, a decrease of about 680,000 compared to October.
