This year’s award goes to scientists Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez for their discoveries of one of the most interesting phenomena in the universe, the black hole.

According to the Nobel Committee, Mr. Penrose invented excellent mathematical methods to discover Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Penrose pointed out that this theory leads to the formation of black holes. And Mr. Genzel and Ms. Ghez discovered a stealthy and extremely heavy object that governs the orbits of stars in the center of the galaxy. A supermassive black hole is the only known explanation at this point.

The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and prize money worth 10 million Swedish kronor (more than 1.1 million USD). Half of these were given to Mr. Penrose, the remainder shared equally to Mr. Genzel and Mrs. Ghez.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Physics honored 3 scientists James Peebles (American), Michel Mayor (Swiss) and Didier Queloz (Swiss) for their work on space.

This year, following the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be awarded on October 7. Next, the Nobel Prize for literature and the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 8 and 9. Finally, the Nobel Prize in Economics will be awarded on October 12.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine 2020 was awarded to three scientists Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice on October 5 for the subtle findings that led to the identification of a new virus, Hepatitis C virus. .
