The more modern the car, the easier it is to hijack the remote control

A series of car manufacturers have recently been informed about security holes on product lines to have a safe handling method for users in the future.

Specifically, a white hat hacker group led by Sam Curry found a series of vulnerabilities in the software of major car manufacturers late last year, thereby allowing them to steal user information, track cars over time. real-time thanks to GPS data or remotely start/stop the vehicle.

Car manufacturers are also quick to respond after being contacted by Sam and his associates and have resolved the issues found by the team. However, this information also shows that cars are increasingly modern with higher connectivity, the more vulnerable they are to remote attacks like today’s computers.

Brands found to be vulnerable include Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Honda, Infiniti, Nissan, Acura, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Ford, Porsche, Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover.

Security vulnerabilities also vary in severity from one company to another. For example, with Mercedes-Benz cars, hackers can unlock / lock the car, start / stop the engine, flash headlights or horn remotely.

Whereas with Ferrari cars, they can access user data, change websites pre-installed by Ferrari and hijack user accounts.

Porsche’s problem is exacerbated by the fact that the team is able to track the vehicle’s location in real time, transmit control commands to these vehicles, and collect user data.

In addition to providing information for car manufacturers to patch security holes, Sam Curry also advises users that when buying a used car, make sure the old owner account has been deleted on the car. In addition, a new strong enough password and 2FA 2-factor security verification system are especially necessary for applications/services that connect to the vehicle.
