The Japanese supercomputer continues to give the rival ‘smelling’

According to the TOP500’s twice-yearly ranking, Japan’s Fugaku supercomputer continues to lead the world in computing speed. Fugaku won the title for the first time in June.

The supercomputer is named after Mount Fuji, the result of a collaboration between Riken Research Institute and Fujitsu Corporation. Fugaku not only has the fastest speed, but also allows competitors to “smell the smoke” in three other categories when measuring performance in industry, applying artificial intelligence and analyzing big data. Thus, Fugaku is the first supercomputer in the world to dominate four categories for two consecutive ranking periods.

Fugaku can perform 442 trillion operations per second, about three times faster than the American supercomputer Summit. Fugaku helps in performing powerful simulations for use in scientific research and military and industrial technology development. Mr. Satoshi Matsuoka, Director of Riken Computer Science Center, believes that Fugaku will solve many difficult social problems.

In May, Fugaku was transferred to the Kiren Computer Science Center in Kobe, the same site where its predecessor, K, was discontinued last summer. K is the world’s first supercomputer to perform more than 10 trillion operations per second. It topped the charts in June 2011 and held the number 1 spot for a year.
