The Galaxy Note 20 screen will be as beautiful and twice as durable as other competitors

Tram Ho

Last week, Corning said it was ready to launch a new generation of toughened glass, Gorilla Glass Victus, with many advantages compared to the previous generation. Most notably, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 series – or at least the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra – will be the first devices to feature this new toughened glass technology.

But what will this benefit the Galaxy Note 20?

First, according to Corning’s disclosure with Android Authority, Gorilla Glass Victus will be twice as scratch-resistant and nearly twice as likely to break as its predecessor, Gorilla Glass 6.

This is a milestone for Corning when recent generations of Gorilla Glass have focused on improving one of two possibilities: better scratch resistance or better breakage. In fact, scratch resistance has hardly improved much from the Gorilla Glass 3 generation so far as the company focuses largely on improved drop resistance.

So, for the first time, a new Gorilla glass can improve both of these capabilities. Gorilla Glass Victus promises double scratch resistance compared to Gorilla Glass 6, while it can still survive if accidentally dropped from a height of 2 meters. Meanwhile Gorilla Glass 6 can only survive falling from a height of 1.6m to the ground.

However, there is another thing that affects the durability of this toughened glass, which is its size. For many years, Corning has tested the durability of their glass with constant thickness.

Therefore, while the current thickness, Gorilla Glass Victus glass is achieving durability indexes superior to its predecessor Gorilla Glass 6, Samsung can accept to use a glass with a thin thickness more but still get the same durability as the previous generation. However, this still depends on what Samsung’s priority for the Galaxy Note 20 is: a device that is more durable against accidents, or a thinner device.

Until now it is not clear whether Gorilla Glass Victus will be available on both Galaxy Note 20 versions or just for the higher-end version, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Anyway, maybe we have to wait until the Galaxy Note 20 officially launched to know Samsung will choose the design direction for this new toughened glass technology.
