The former Samsung executive pledged not to reveal any technological secrets when he joined the Chinese company

The above statements of former director Chang Won-ki came after concerns about his transfer to a Chinese semiconductor company.

Chang was previously the chairman and chief executive of Samsung China. However, he recently unexpectedly moved to work for Eswin as vice president in February this year.

Most notably, when Eswin leader Wang Dongsheng, who had previously been chairman of China’s famous display maker BOE, is a major rival of Samsung and LG.

In a recent interview with Hankyung, Chang announced his joining Eswin solely for his friendship with Wang. He said that because of his friendship, he even proposed BOE to produce LCD panels for Samsung, when Wang was president of BOE.

Chang added, Wang first proposed cooperating with him in 2015 but he declined. After Wang left BOE last year and asked Chang again, he finally decided to accept that invitation because of their deep friendship.

To reassure concerns about technology leaks, Chang said that he was an engineer involved in the research and production of 1MB DRAM for Samsung 30 years ago. But for now, he doesn’t know the latest semiconductor technologies from Samsung.

Chang is now 66 years old and has very few updates on screen technology.

Chang emphasized that Samsung is something very important and he once told Wang that he would not do anything to affect Samsung if he entered Eswin. Meanwhile, Eswin focused on manufacturing screen control IC chips, an important component of the panel.

At Eswin, Chang simply played an advisory role related to the direction of the company’s business operations.

Former director Chang Won-ki joined Samsung in 1981. He started his career in the semiconductor business, then headed the LCD display division from 2009-2011. He was first appointed to lead the Chinese market in 2011 and held that position until 2017 before leaving the company.
