TikTok has just released its monthly active users (MAU) details in the US and globally for the first time. In its lawsuit against the US government for an executive order targeting TikTok, the short video app also revealed a nearly 800% increase in monthly active users in the US since November 2018 when it had only 11 million active users.
About a year later, this number more than doubled to 27 million. In June 2020, a few months after Covid-19’s onset, the number of monthly TikTok users in the US skyrocketed to more than 91 million. Currently, more than 100 million Americans are using TikTok monthly and 50 million daily users.

Around the world, TikTok also recorded impressive growth in users. In January 2018, TikTok’s global user base was around 55 million. December 2018, increased to 271 million and 507 million by December 2019. This month, TikTok surpassed 2 billion downloads and had nearly 700 million monthly users as of July.

TikTok is challenging President Trump’s executive decree in the US after authorities viewed TikTok as a national security risk because parent company ByteDance is based in China. In a lawsuit filed on August 24, the company asserted that the US had no evidence proving that TikTok shared data with the Chinese government. The ordinance is accused of violating the constitution and due process.

TikTok is a direct threat to Facebook, although the US social network is overwhelming in the number of global monthly users (about 2.7 billion people). According to The Wall Street Times, it was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg who sparked the flame of fear about TikTok in the US government.
