The farewell iPads: The picture shows the sadness that Americans are suffering in the midst of a pandemic

During the past week, a photo posted by Twitter account Roto_tudor has received a fierce share from the online community. That picture is simply a row of iPads lined up next to each other. The thing is, the story behind it is incredibly heartbreaking.

Because, these are iPads for the relatives of Covid-19 infected patients who are about to die, so that they can say their final goodbyes. It is a painful reality that the victims of the world’s pandemic are suffering in American hospitals.

“These iPads are intended for the last visit of well-cared patients,” – quoted in the Twitter account post above.

With the risk of corona virus infection being so high, patients in intensive care are forced to say goodbye to friends and relatives through soulless iPads. Their last moments took place in solitude, not meeting anyone.

The photo has been shared more than 24,000 times, attracting hundreds of thousands of likes from the online community. Some other social media users also share similar stories, having to chat with infected relatives through online platforms.

“On November 30, my boyfriend had to say goodbye to his mother on an iPad. He could neither hug her one last time, nor hold her hand,” – a user wrote.

“He was sitting behind the glass, holding an iPad and trying to say a different goodbye to your father. I was indignant. I couldn’t even be upset, because of the rising anger.”

Another user shared: “Just chatted with her on an iPad. We couldn’t even see her, and I hate that.”

“Had to do the same thing with my mother on Thanksgiving Day. The pain of her walking was really unbearable, and should not have been necessary.”

According to the most recent data from the New York Times , the US currently has about 14 million Covid-19 infections, with 276,300 deaths. The growing number of new infections has prompted many cities and states to adopt tightening policies to control the spread of the disease. Among them are the closure of non-essential services, and the enactment of curfew.

The state of California has revealed plans to issue a “at home” statewide order, in the face of a situation where intensive care units are slowly becoming overwhelmed. Currently, the state records 1.2 million infections, and 19,400 deaths.

The “stay at home” order would include requirements to restrict certain businesses and prevent crowds from gathering people. Gyms, chapels, and playgrounds all have to be closed. The restaurant, too, can only operate in the form of take-out.

“If we don’t act immediately, our health system will be overwhelmed,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.
